SPORT FISHING
As regards fly fishing, the entire archipelago of the Canary Islands has some exceptional conditions, mainly because of its mild climate and geographical location.
Its ichthyological wealth is impressive and there are almost 1,500 species to be found in the Canary Islands as a result of the characteristics of its platform and sea temperature, which favour development.
Enthusiasts can fish all year, not only in certain seasons like in other parts, in pleasant climatological conditions.
The various modes possible on the island are: fly fishing from an anchored or moving boat, and shoreline angling, in areas with shallow waters and good visibility.
Among the species most prized by fishing enthusiasts are those of the "shark" family, dogfish, white shark, dusky shark, and lesser spotter dogfish; in the bonito family it is worth mentioning tuna, bonito, mackerel, swordfish, gilthead, meagre; and other species such as eel, conger eel, moray, grouper, sea bass and amberjack.
The underwater parks are an alternative tourist attraction on the island of Fuerteventura. Although the surface of the island is almost desert-like, its sealife is currently the richest in Spain. Under the surface of its coasts is the most fantastic variety of aquatic life which any aquanaut can imagine.
In the north, the triangle formed by the fishing village of Corralejo, Isla de Lobos and Las Dunas, and at a depth of no greater than 17 metres, you can see the best spectacle in the world: the flight of the ray, the chromatic beauty of the parrotfish, the speed of a barracuda, the massing together of the shoals of horse mackerel, saupe, white bream, the docile swimming of grouper, the curiosity of pollack, the snaking of moray, and the greedy comber which fight over everything they are offered.
This is why there are plans to create an underwater park in Corralejo in order to preserve sealife, forming nature reserve areas, so that tourists can explore these depths.
